This article describes some of the challenges getting an Extreme Programming project going in a large company. It was an embedded communications system, and the company prided itself on the formality of their processes. The trouble was, the director did not think they could keep following these big processes and meet the needs of the market and their business.

First few words:

This is a story about starting a project using an adaptation of XP
in a company with a large formal software development process.
Defined Process Systems is a big company (the name is fictitious). The division I worked with develops safety-critical systems and is building a new system to replace an existing legacy product.
